Arahmaiani アラフマヤーニ "Breaking Words"「言葉を割る」 2006.4.30[大東亜共栄軒1]@out-lounge

The artist asks each of the audience to write his most important thing on a white china dish and shows them. Then she throws those dishes one after another at a wall, they come to pieces. After the performance one of the audience asked her a question; breaking dishes with words, which mean important things, is that breaking the important things? Arahmaiani answered that the essence of things is one thing, the icon of things is another thing, people respecting the icon sometimes can't see the essence of things, it is a problem. 用意した白い陶器の皿に、観客それぞれがいちばん大切に思っているものを1つずつ書いてもらい、その内容を紹介する。そのあと皿を立て続けに壁に投げつけて粉々に割る。パフォーマンス後の質疑応答で観客から、大切な物事を書いた皿を割ることは、その大切な物事を壊すことになるのではないか？　という質問があった。それに対してアラフマヤーニは、「物事の本質と、それを何らかの形に表した象徴・偶像（icon）とは別物である。象徴・偶像を崇めるうちに本質が見えなくなることが問題だ」と応えた。（文責：芝田）
